In recent years, a new generation of changemakers has been rising in Hualien. They are not only preserving local culture but also breathing new life into traditional agriculture. Among them, Houshan Fern (Bukuy Dgiyag Mhiyug Giri), located in the Kdusan Village of Xiulin Township, stands out as a shining example. Founder Lin Chun-Hsiung leads a team of young people who have turned the local specialty, bird’s-nest fern (known as shan-su), into the heart of a thriving enterprise that combines agricultural production, cultural experiences, dining, and lodging/camping in an innovative model of six-tier industry integration.
After earning a degree in business management and completing his military service, Lin returned to his hometown in Hualien, only to find that the bird’s-nest ferns cultivated by tribe elders were struggling due to low market prices.
