Have you ever heard indigenous ancient chants in a nightclub?
When the deep bass of electronic music fuses with the ancient melodies of the Pangcah people, it’s more than just a remix. It’s a meeting of ancestral spirit and modern rhythm. At the heart of this sonic revolution stands DJ Dungi Sapor, from the Rinahem Tribe of the Cikasuan community in Hualien.
Raised in the city, Dungi once hid her Pangcah identity after facing discrimination. In college, she chose to study law, determined to speak up for indigenous rights.
At a campus club fair, Dungi stumbled upon electronic music, and that moment sparked her DJ journey. Inspired by the European “Techno” scene, she found “Techno’s ever-building, layering beats help people unwind and escape.”
After graduating from college, she entered the workforce, but two turning points abroad changed everything. In New Zealand, she witnessed how the Māori proudly embraced their culture. Later in Australia, a spontaneous chance to step behind the DJ booth at a party reignited her calling. That night, she knew she wanted to pursue DJing full-time, and fuse indigenous music with electronic sounds.
