By the end of 2018, Dungi quit her job to become a full-time DJ. But when the pandemic hit, everything came to a halt. She returned home to Hualien, where she began learning music production and immersed herself in tribe life. She sought guidance from Pangcah elders, studying the tribe’s language and traditions. Through social media, she started sharing glimpses of her DJ sets alongside everyday moments from the community, slowly introducing the world to the indigenous electronic music.
Reimagining Tradition Through Innovation
Dungi knew that for indigenous ancient chants to reach wider audiences, innovation was essential. That belief led her to step into the role of producer and release her own album, DUNGI SAPOR. She personally recorded the voices of tribe elders and reinterpreted a traditional Pangcah farewell song, transforming it into an upbeat tune that sends off young people as they enter military service. “This kind of arrangement allows the music to cross generations and peoples,” she says. “It shows that culture is alive, always flowing and evolving.”
